JPEG XL is a new (2020) ‘royalty free’ image format with an open source reference implementation. It supports wide colour gamut and HDR, up to 4096 channels in addition to RGB + alpha, progressive decoding, animated content and more.

Designed by the Joint Photographic Experts Group and developed by Sami Boukortt, Alex Deymo, Moritz Firsching, Thomas Fischbacher, Eugene Kliuchnikov, Robert Obryk, Alexander Rhatushnyak, Zoltán Szabadka, Lode Vandevenne, Jan Wassenberg, Joint Photographic Experts Group, Google and Cloudinary.

The reference software, libjxl is released under the New BSD License.

It has preliminary support in Chromium and Firefox (As of 2021-08-16).
