Edward Tufte data–ink ratio

‘Tufte defines the data-ink ratio as the amount of data-ink divided by the total ink required to print the graphic’ … He puts forward the following five principles related to data-ink:

  • Above all else, show data
  • Maximize the data-ink ratio
  • Erase non-data-ink
  • Erase redundant data-ink
  • Revise and edit
